This video, Nutzle's Picture Book, is a very small sampling of
Futzie Nutzle's extensive body of work and includes paintings, as
well as some of the distinctive, fine line, black ink drawings he
is so well known for. The video was part of Futzie Nutzle:
Paintings and Works on Paper, an exhibition at the Cabrillo College
Gallery from March 18 - April 22, 2011.

The work of Futzie Nutzle: Paintings and Works on Paper is the first major exhibition of work by this elusive artist in more than a decade. Futzie, a.k.a. Bruce Kleinsmith, was at one time the most widely known visual artist in Santa Cruz. From the late 1960s into the 1990s, Nutzle's drawings, paintings, cartoons and posters were everywhere—including the South Bay and San Francisco. His drawings were often reproduced in the various newspapers that came and went during those years, but he made a name for himself in the 1970s when he became one of Rolling Stone Magazine's first cartoonists to have his work displayed on the Letters page. Nutzle describes his whimsical pen and ink drawings, which were a regular contribution to Rolling Stone for many years, as a "sparse, spontaneous, aggravated way of thinking" that never had a constant character or theme.
Nutzle's images were a revelation to readers and an inspiration to other artists and writers. Aside from his regular contributions in Rolling Stone, his work appeared in The Prague Post and for over ten years in The Japan Times, further internationalizing his visibility. The Metro and Santa Cruz Weekly also frequently published his drawings. He has been featured in over ten published books, at least two of which, Modern Loafer and Run the World, are his collected drawings. His work has been collected in both private and public collections including both San Francisco's and New York's Museums of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, The Oakland Museum and many others.
